How do I catch the Legendary Dogs?

The following shows how to Encounter & Capture the 3 Legendary Dogs.
Raikou is electric-type, Entei is fire-type, and Suicune is water-type. The process of capturing any of these Pokemon can really test your patience since they move around alot and tend to flee if you encounter any of them.

HOW TO ENCOUNTER RAIKOU, ENTEI, OR SUICUNE

Before you can encounter the Legendary Dogs, you must first wake them up. Initially, all 3 of these Pokemon will be sitting in the basement of the Burnt Tower in Ecruteak City. To wake them up. go into the Burnt Tower in Ecruteak City. You need to have a Pokemon on your team that knows the Rock Smash ability. Break one of the rocks that block your way & proceed north. Then go through one of the holes in the floor. If you go through the correct hole, you will be able to access a set of stairs in the basement that lead to the 3 legendary beasts. Simply walk towards those 3 Pokemon & they will wake up & flee in different directions.

After waking up Raikou, Entei, & Suicune, they will only be found in the grassy areas in Johto. (Exception: they will *never* appear in the grassy areas that are in the Mt. Silver area.) Additionally, they will *never* be found in caves, water, or any structures.

As for tracking the whereabouts of Raikou, you cannot do that until you encounter Raikou for the first time. Same goes for Entei & Suicune. So until you meet these Pokemon for the first time, you'll just have to walk around in the grassy areas of Johto until you meet them by chance. But don't worry, if you don't capture Raikou, Entei, or Suicune on the first attempt, you will have additional chances to capture it, provided that you don't make it faint. Also, if you fail to capture Raikou, Entei, or Suicune on the first try, you will then be able to track its location with the Pokedex, provided that you don't knock it out.

The Legendary Dogs will change locations if you:

FAILING TO CAPTURE THEM THE FIRST TRY

First of all, if you know that a particular grassy area contains Raikou, Entei, or Suicune, & that you can enter such area before Raikou, Entei, or Suicune leaves that area, you should first save your game in case you do encounter Raikou, Entei, or Suicune, & accidentally make it faint.

Clearly, if you make Raikou, Entei, or Suicune faint, you will have to restore your saved game or start a new game in order to encounter that Pokemon again. But if Raikou flees or if you flee before you successfully capture it, any damage that you've inflicted on it will not go away. Same goes for Entei & Suicune. However, any status problems (i.e. paralysis) that you give Raikou, Entei, or Suicune will be gone when you encounter Raikou, Entei, or Suicune again.

Additionally, if you don't capture Raikou/Entei/Suicune on the first try, you can then track it with the Pokedex, provided that you didn't faint Raikou/Entei/Suicune.

 CAPTURING RAIKOU/ENTEI/SUICUNE

  1. Build up a Scyther to a very high level & make sure it knows the False Swipe ability.
  2. Build up a Haunter/Gengar until its speed rating is about 93 or better & make sure it knows the Hypnosis ability.
  3. Make sure you have at least 20 Ultra Balls in your possession.
  4. When entering a grassy area that has Raikou/Entei/Suicune, be sure your trained Haunter/Gengar is at the top of your Pokemon team list.
  5. When you encounter Raikou/Entei/Suicune, immediately have your Haunter/Gengar use the Hypnosis move on it.
  6. If Hypnosis is successful, immediately recall Haunter/Gengar & send out Scyther. Have Scyther use False Swipe on Raikou/Entei/Suicune until Raikou/Entei/Suicune has only 1 HP left. If you trained your Scyther well enough, you should be able to accomplish this within a few turns.
  7. Then recall Scyther & send out Haunter/Gengar again. Finally, just throw Ultra Balls at the weakened Raikou/Entei/Suicune. If Raikou/Entei/Suicune wakes up before you successfully capture it, put it back to sleep with Hypnosis & continue throwing Ultra Balls. Usually, if Raikou/Entei/Suicune wakes up, it will immediately use one of its attacks, so you will have an opportunity to put it back to sleep before it tries to escape.
