New Bark Town

Things to get:
- Pokegear (Mom)
- your first Pokémon (Prof. Elm)
- Berry (your first Pokémon)
- potion (Prof. Elm's assistant)

Setting up the time

Because this game play is in real-time mode, you need to set up the clock before you start your game.  The default is set at 10 in the afternoon.  Press up arrow key will increase the time of the day.  The time of the day is divided into 3 sections: 10am to 6pm (Afternoon), 6pm to 4am (Night) and 4am to 10am (Morning).  Some Pokémon will only appear during certain times of the day.  Then, you need to set up the minutes of the hour.

 Professor Oak and you

Prof. Oak will then give his usual speech about the Pokémon in this world, and he will tell you to get your first Pokémon from Prof. Elm next door.  At this point, you will be prompted to enter your name:

Getting Pokégear from your mom

When you go downstairs, your mom will give you back the POKEGEAR that you sent out for repairs. Afterwards, she will ask you for the day of the week. This is also important as there are certain events which occur on a weekly basis. The default day is set at Sunday. Scroll up will turn the day to Monday, etc.. Then, you have to set if the time is at Daylight Saving Time now (this isn't for the Japanese version).

Prof. Elm's Lab

Prof. ELM's Lab is the big house just left of your house. Inside the lab, Prof. ELM will ask you to do a favor for him and go to Mr. Pokémon's house (near Cherrygrove) and bring back his rare discovery. Then, he will let you choose your first Pokémon and inform you that you can heal your Pokémon at his machine.

The three choices of Pokémon are:
Cyndaquil (Fire type -- like a porcupine)
Totodile (Water type -- like a crocodile)
Chikorita (Grass type -- a creature with a leaf on its head)

In contrast to the other Pokémon games, the grass type in this game is the toughest to start with.  It is not effective against many of the bugs and birds you will encounter right outside your home town.  Also, your first gym battle in Violet City will also be tough since they use flying Pokémon.

The Pokémon you chose will be carrying a Berry.  If you equip this kind of fruit to a Pokémon, the Pokémon will recover 10 HP by itself when needed in battle.  Before you leave the lab, Prof. Elm's assistant will give you a potion which will heal your Pokémon 20 HP.

Menus

You can access your menus by pressing the start key during the game play.  The Option menu allows you to change the setting such as text speed and sound.  The Bag menu displays the items you are carrying.  Your bag now has four different compartments.  The left pocket is used for carrying healing items like potions and antidotes.  The front pocket is used to carry your Pokéballs.  The right pocket stores all your TMS and HMS for you.  The middle compartment contains important items such as the bicycle and money bag.

Around New Bark Town

There really isn't anything exciting happening around this town.  However, you will notice a strange looking guy sneaking around behind Prof. Elm's Lab.  When you try to talk to him, he will push you away. When you talk to the people in this town, someone will tell you that Pikachu is actually an evolved Pokemon (you'll find out soon enough).
